Pottery
The Pottery program assists individuals in their development of appropriate work skills and habits using pottery as the medium. Individuals are encouraged to make choices pertaining to their work and social life, build independence, and participate in activities in their communities.

The Pottery program at Providence Center had its beginning in the fall of 1978. At that time, a local young potter approached Providence Center with a proposal that she start a pottery program that would enable workers with disabilities to construct and finish a saleable pottery line. Initially planters were the primary product. These were constructed by rolling clay balls and pressing them into terra cotta molds “Ball construction” continues to be a method of production, but slab production has largely supplanted it. The custom mixing of clay and glazes has always been and continues to be an integral part of the program.

The Center extended the line to include kitchenware in 1981. These shapes and designs are original and are totally hand decorated. Some irregularities are characteristic of handcrafted pottery and make each piece a one-of-a-kind collector’s item.

All of the stoneware is functional as well as decorative. All products are fired in an electric kiln, thereby making for an exceptionally durable product. The kitchenware is dishwasher safe and can be used in either a conventional or microwave oven. The glazes are lead-free, making all dishware completely safe for cooking or serving any type of food.
