Young Man Services: Assistive Technology
TAP DANCE is Providence Center's Technology Assistance Program (TAP) Developing And Nurturing a Completely-Accessible Environment (DANCE). Providence Center features three accessible computer labs. They are located at the Jean Bradbury Center in Arnold, Cloverleaf Center in Millersville, and the Woodshop (also in Millersville). Each activity area within the centers has also been equipped with a computer. Thanks to a grant from the Chesapeake District Foundation of Civitan International, the program took a major leap forward with the addition of a wide variety of new equipment and software programs. Other donors, such as The Bozzuto Group, have donated high-quality computers which are used in the computer labs and throughout the center. The Center’s fully accessible computers provide adaptive interfacing techniques and access to the Internet. The stars of the program are the Center's adults who use computers and assistive devices to access a wide range of educational programs. Through the labs, staff members provide training and support to develop typing, word processing, and data entry skills. Individuals gain heightened cognitive and social skills through their rich interactions with fellow participants in the program. Whether learning new skills, listening to music, or watching DVDs, each participant can find an activity to suite their desires.
The Pottery program assists individuals in their development of appropriate work skills and habits using pottery as the medium. Individuals are encouraged to make choices pertaining to their work and social life, build independence, and participate in activities in their communities.
